Central Lutheran Church in Van Nuys will begin offering Basic English Classes on Tuesday 9/12/2023, and they will run weekly from 7-8:30 pm through November 14.
In the past, these classes have been a way to help families with limited English skills work to raise themselves to better and more stable jobs (i.e. out of poverty) and to help their children with homework (better education, across generations).
This year we’re adding an online conversation component so students can practice speaking without fear or family dynamic issues, between weekly classes.
We will be offering childcare, a children’s program, and a youth program during this time each week so that a whole family can participate should they wish to. This is expected to build greater relationships, for the sake of the Good News.
We are currently recruiting Volunteers for the following areas:
Teachers and class assistants for weekly unperson adult English classes (6425 Tyrone Ave, Van Nuys) in a casual style – 3 levels – with all class materials provided by the Master Teacher. Each week will open with a Community presentation for the large group as we gather, then break into classes for about 50 minutes at the following levels:
Level 1: Student does not speak, read, or write any English, but may read some Spanish.
Level 2: Student speaks, reads, or writes some English, but needs more practice with vocabulary, grammar, and conversation.
Level 3: Student needs more practice in reading, writing, and/or conversation.
ONLINE Conversation partners during the week for adult English students – via Zoom, Skype, WhatsApp, FaceTime, or another mutually agreeable format
5 minutes, 3 times per week – Level 1 learners (15-minute commitment each week, need some Spanish ability)
15 minutes, 3 times per week – Level 2 learners (45-minute commitment each week, limited Spanish ability required)
30 minutes, 2-3 times per week – Level 3 learners (1-1.5 hours commitment per week, no significant Spanish ability required)
On-site volunteers for child care, children’s and/or youth groups (middle and high school). Anyone over 18 will be required to have a background check.
Limited paid positions for infant/toddler care and children supervisor are available.
