Alleluia Christ is Risen, He is Risen Indeed, Alleluia!
As I travel around the synod, I am finding great joy in reminding everyone of God’s love. It’s a simple message, but it certainly gets lost in the fray of human concern, violence, loss and economic realities. I ask myself, “Do I believe it? Do I believe Jesus is alive? And if so, how is He changing my life?” I recommit myself to this question – how is Jesus influencing and changing my life?”
Let me tell you where I see the living Savior these days: several of our congregations have found a new sense of self and ministry after COVID. Many report their food ministries are continuing to be critical parts of neighborhood care. Most congregations admit their attendance has not come back to pre-COVID levels, but those who are engaged are deeply engaged, grateful to serve God’s people and be together. We realize God is with us, showing us new things. We are wiser, leaner, more open to God’s will.
Our financial report from 2022 is incredibly positive. Our giving was at 97% of budget, in a time when many synods report 10-15% decline in giving. I do not take this for granted. Your generosity is impactful and important. I also praise God for the remarkably generous gift from Emmanuel Lutheran in North Hollywood, who gave 10% of the proceeds of a building sale to the synod. This gift can almost fund the salaries of the entire pastoral synod staff this year. As you can see, one large gift makes significant impact and we praise God for that. Hope Hollywood and Shepherd of the Valley in Simi Valley also chose to tithe (10%) of significant bequests they received. Those gifts will also go a long way to fund programs, such as our Youth Symposium in May (more on that later!)
Our synodical work continues to focus on the large amounts of transition in congregations. A common trend is a long-term pastor retires and the congregation realizes they cannot afford to replace them with a full-time pastor. Our task is to accompany congregations in honest assessments of resources and help them find the best way forward. This is not a time of despair, it’s a time of newness. Easter morning was exciting, but strange and shocking. People took quite a while to believe the new thing that is the Resurrected Savior. We need to grieve losses but I invite us to look to the newness Jesus is offering. It will look different. But this is God’s future, and we are called to live into it.
In my last report to you, I said we had a significant amount of income after the sale of two buildings. Because of this influx of cash, our executive committee was able to release over $300,000 to repair two more of our synodically-owned buildings, Fe Y Esperanza in South Gate and Pueblo de Dios in Compton. Both buildings have significant deferred maintenance, which meant both buildings suffered severe damage in the latest rains. Thanks be to God we finally had the resources to bring both buildings back up to safe standards. The roof at Pueblo de Dios is done, but Fe Y Esperanza cannot be started until May.
We are strengthening the responsibility of the Evangelical and Outreach Mission Team, who are responsible for distributing grants to our new starts and strategic ministries. They are now tasked with dreaming about each of these ministry’s futures, how to best support them, and, God willing, how to start new ministries.
Registration for our Synod Assembly, “Caring for the Body of Christ” has begun. We will gather at CLU on June 2 and 3. We are emphasizing welcome and ministry to the disabled, seniors and those who require language accessibility. Bishop Craig Satterlee, who has written several books about worship and is legally blind, will be a keynote speaker and preacher. Nicolette Penaranda, the ELCA Director of African Descent Ministries is our churchwide rep. Pr. Zach Johnson will lead several Bible studies and we will host several workshops about accessibility and justice.
As we look to the future, it’s also wonderful to celebrate the past. After three years of delays due to COVID-19, we were finally able to dedicate the Bishop Nelson W. Trout Memorial Chapel at the Lutheran Center. Bishop Trout was the first African American elected bishop in the American Lutheran Church, our predecessor body. He was a pastor at Community Lutheran in Los Angeles. We welcomed about 80 people, including members of the Trout family, to a wonderful celebration in our offices, and to a worship service at Community the next day. Deep gratitude to Mrs. Carolyn Foster and the African Descent Lutheran Association for their inspiration and tireless commitment to the Trout Family and this event. They are wonderful financial and spiritual supporters.
The next week we celebrated Rev. Kenneth Wheeler, also a former pastor of Community Lutheran, who has authored a powerful book, “Us, the Resurrection of American Terror.” I highly recommend this book, which not only calls the ELCA to repent of white supremacy but also gives us many tools to come to God and our neighbor with humility and hope. We hosted a book signing in our offices and Pastor Wheeler preached at Community Lutheran. What an honor for me to spend time with him.
Our Youth Ministry coordinator and organizer, Tyra Dennis, has been working on a Youth Symposium to be held May 20 at the synod office. Young people and their parents are invited to attend separate workshops on addiction including fentanyl, sexuality and race. The day culminates with a concert featuring Jonathan Rundman and Music Mayhem. Registration and information will be coming soon!
We are busy. I pray this busyness does not distract us from deepening our relationship with Jesus Christ. The world needs the love of God and God gives us the opportunity to reflect that love. We have Jesus’ call to share that love. There is much to do, but the God who raised Jesus will empower us. Jesus is alive!

¡Aleluya, Cristo ha resucitado, ha resucitado! ¡Aleluya!
Mientras viajo por el sínodo, encuentro una gran alegría al recordarles a todos el amor de Dios. Es un mensaje simple, pero ciertamente se pierde en la rutina de la preocupación humana, la violencia, la pérdida y las realidades económicas. Y si es así, ¿cómo está cambiando Él mi vida?”. Me vuelvo a comprometer con esta pregunta: ¿cómo está influyendo Jesús y cambiando mi vida?”.
Déjame decirte dónde veo al Salvador viviente en estos días: varias de nuestras congregaciones han encontrado un nuevo sentido de sí mismas y de ministerio después del COVID. Muchos informan que sus ministerios de alimentos continúan siendo partes críticas del cuidado del vecindario. La mayoría de las congregaciones admiten que su asistencia no ha vuelto a los niveles anteriores a la COVID-19, pero quienes están comprometidos están profundamente comprometidos, agradecidos de servir al pueblo de Dios y estar juntos.
