Dear ones,
On Sunday morning, November 20, 2022, many of us woke to the news of another shooting at an LGBTQ+ nightclub. The Q Club in Colorado Springs was violently attacked the night before, with a single gunman killing five people and injuring over two dozen. I was honored to speak at a vigil in West Hollywood on Sunday night, reminding all in attendance that everyone is worthy of God’s love, everyone deserves of safety and respect. Several other civic leaders spoke out against anti-gay, anti-trans hatred. There were several correlations made between hate speech and violent acts. I urge all people of faith to interrupt speech which diminishes the value of any human life. Racist comments, homophobic slurs, anti-trans jokes – all must end. Society will only change when we say, “Enough.” Hateful speech has become acceptable, and we see it can encourage hateful, deadly actions.
For what else can we pray? We know “thoughts and prayers” without action does not end violence. We need God’s guidance to do something more. On Sunday night, in front of an LGBTQ+ crowd, I prayed for the courage to act against gun violence. I find this especially frustrating. As a religious and civic leader, I would love to participate in lobbying legislators for gun safety. And yet, there are no bills coming before Congress to legislate access to guns.
So for now, we can only raise awareness in our congregations and communities about the threats from guns and the very real consequences of hate. We can speak with our neighbors about their concerns and support grass roots movements. We can use our influence with decision-makers to move things forward. I have included a litany against gun violence and a social statement from the ELCA for your use.

God of Life and Freedom, we pray for the courage to fight for life and safety all your children, including the LGBTQ+ community, people of color and the most vulnerable among us. Guide us to make sensible gun laws, centering the voices of victims and potential victims. Help us use our influence, relationships and minds to make the world a safer place. Amen.

El domingo por la mañana, 20 de noviembre de 2022, muchos(as) de nosotros(as) nos despertamos con la noticia de otro tiroteo en un club nocturno LGBTQ+. El Q Club en Colorado Springs fue atacado violentamente la noche anterior, con un solo pistolero matando a cinco personas e hiriendo a más de dos docenas. Tuve el honor de hablar en una vigilia en West Hollywood el domingo por la noche, recordando a todos(as) los asistentes que todos(as) son dignos del amor de Dios, todos merecen seguridad y respeto. Varios otros líderes cívicos hablaron en contra del odio anti-gay y anti-trans. Se establecieron varias correlaciones entre el discurso de odio, y los actos violentos. Insto a todas las personas de fe a interrumpir el discurso que disminuye el valor de cualquier vida humana. Comentarios racistas, insultos homofóbicos, chistes anti-trans, todo debe terminar. La sociedad solo cambiará cuando digamos: “Basta”. El discurso heroico se ha vuelto aceptable, y vemos que puede alentar a acciones odiosas y mortales.
¿Por qué más podemos orar? Sabemos que “los pensamientos y las oraciones” sin acción intencional no terminan con la violencia. Necesitamos la guía de Dios para hacer algo más. El domingo por la noche, frente a una multitud LGBTQ +, oré por el coraje de actuar contra la violencia armada. Esto me parece especialmente frustrante. Como líder religiosa y cívica, me encantaría participar en el cabildeo de los legisladores para la seguridad de las armas. Y, sin embargo, no hay proyectos de ley presentados ante el Congreso para legislar el acceso a las armas.
Entonces, por ahora, solo podemos crear conciencia en nuestras congregaciones, y comunidades sobre las amenazas de las armas, y las consecuencias muy reales del odio. (Title: Bishop’s Message on Gun Violence)
